Movies - Originals or Remakes?

With all the recent remakes of older movies that have been coming out recently, and are due out in the next year or so, it got me to thinking what is better, originals or remakes. My answer of course is it depends on the movie.

Take Assault on Precinct 13, I think the original was a classic and really showed what could be done with a small cast and limited budget. It was creepy, atmospheric and the characters were somewhat believable. The remake was action packed, full of loud explosions, twists turns and the characters were somewhat believable. Or to put it another way, I liked original and remake equally.

Now we look at Dawn of the dead. I hated the original movie, the characters were stupid, the zombies lame and the music was god awful. On the other hand I thought the recent remake was a great movie, not brilliant, just great. It kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through and having the recently deceased zombies running around (after all rigamortis will not have set in yet)was a stroke of genius.

So really I think it should depend on the movie and not whether it is a remake or not. To those people who don't give a movie a chance, and say insulting things about it without seeing it simply because it is a remake...I say get a life. So what if it is a remake of one of your favourite movies? It doesn't take anything away from the original and who knows you might actually enjoy the ride.
